Investing in 2013: Best Bets in an Uncertain Economy ? Money ...

If you're planning on investing in 2013, economic uncertainty probably will be a factor in deciding where to put your money ? but some sectors stand out as solid prospects regardless of the economic climate.

Here's a breakdown of the best sectors for your money in the New Year.

Hot Sectors for Investing in 2013

Silver: With economic uncertainty expected for the near term, gold is typically considered the best hedging choice.

But, as Money Morning Global Resources Specialist Peter Krauth pointed out in his 2013 silver price forecast, silver actually provides more potential for appreciation ? and at a far better starting price.

Krauth says the white metal, currently selling for around $30 an ounce, could move to a new high of $54 an ounce in 2013 ? and not just because of its hedging value.

Investment demand for silver should continue to increase, driven by the creation and expansion of several silver-backed exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and increased minting of silver coins.
Industrial use of silver is expected to grow even faster. That's largely due to the use of silver in solar panel manufacturing, which consumed 60 million ounces in 2012.

Solar panel usage is expected to grow as a result of U.S. President Barack Obama's emphasis on alternative energy and increased demand from Japan, which has made a major shift away from nuclear power in the wake of the Fukushima nuclear power plant disaster.

Consumer staples: Even if the U.S. economy plunges back into a recession, consumer staples like food, beverages and household items will make for good defensive plays.

And if we avoid a recession, Americans will have more money available for discretionary consumer spending. That would translate to more sales of higher-end luxury goods sold by many of the same companies that carry staples.

Whatever happens with the economy, there's little downside and plenty of growth potential for consumer staples.

But be aware margins in this sector are thin, so focus on companies with good management and effective cost controls when investing in 2013.

Where can young people go for refuge? (Open letter to the Principle ...

Courtni Webb, one of your 17 year old high school students, is now facing the possibility of being expelled from your school after writing a poem about the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School. In the poem Courtni wrote she understood why someone like Adam Lanza might do what he did. She wasn?t agreeing with it, but in her poem said she understood the oppression in society that could cause such a tragedy.

For her intelligence and insight you did not award her a scholarship, but you alienated her further, exactly what she was writing about in her poem.? Working against young people like this, rather than with them, will do more harm than good. But you know this already, as that will be the reason your school was founded in the first place.? Your Life Learning Academy, that Courtni attends, is a last chance educational facility that takes on children that have struggled at their previous schools, who have been in trouble with the police, been involved with gangs etc. ?So no doubt Courtni has a reputation that precedes her.? She will not be an angel, and that may have influenced your decision to suspend her on this occasion.? I don?t have the luxury of knowing the inside story of what was going on here.

is it a case that Courtni is more intelligent than you give her credit for?? If so this is a sad situation, as we hope teachers have high expectations of their students, and have a duty of care to support them when they show signs of intelligence, (even when challenging to society?s norms), not to demonize them, as has happened here.? From what I can see, a young person who has struggled in life, has turned to poetry to creatively express her feelings, (which at her age will be as confused as they are clear), and rather than those of you with a duty of care for her to see that talent and nurture her skills, you have thrown it back in her face and have alienated her further.

Have we learned nothing?

Where can young people go for refuge from a world that doesn?t understand them, if not into the safety of the creative world, in a school that is their last chance? If a 17 year has the clarity of mind to write a poem about their feelings, no matter how challenging to adult polite society those feelings may be, they should be applauded, not treated as a bad person, (which is obviously why they might be angry in the first place).

Where are the ears to hear what these young people have got to say?

All over the United States (if not the world) there are people, experts and lay people, trying to make sense of the tragedy that took place at Sandy Hook Elementary School, trying to understand the actions of Adam Lanza. They will be criminal psychologists, police officers, sociologists, anthropologists, school teachers, news reporters, columnists, politicians, bloggers, cultural commentators, mental health practitioners, and a whole host of other stakeholders that have an interest in seeing a peaceful world. Why do you not allow a young person their say also? More specifically, why not allow Courtni Webb her say? What makes her not worthy of an opinion, but all the others are allowed a say? What is going on here?

The other type of person I did not include in that list of opinion givers are artists. I?m sure artists have been having their say on the issue, but for them it maybe too soon to make a creative response. This is where Courtni should have been applauded even more. She has had the courage to make a creative response, to make her feelings known. She saw her art, poetry, as a safe place to explore the feelings she is having. Courtni is an much of an expert as any listed above. She is exactly the demographic we should be listening to, not silencing.

Where can young people go for refuge, if not in the safety of their own note books, and the trust of the adults around them?

Do not make it that the only place of refuge a young person has to go, is their own grave, by their own hand.

We need to keep our young people safe, not treat them as outcasts, cut adrift.? But as I said, I know you know all of this already, as that will be the reason your school was founded in the first place.

What other options do young people have to be taken seriously, and for their voices to be heard?? We (as adults) need to learn something here. Be careful how we treat the hearts of young people.

Your sincerely,

Dr Shawn Sobers

Internet marketing for online businesses - two essential keys to ...

If you are new to internet marketing for online businesses, it can be the Wild West in many ways. The Internet is a great opportunity for people around the world in general, and the ability to reach hundreds of millions of people. For the first time, small businesses access to many potential customers. And this is the biggest challenge for an online marketing plan. Approximately 70% of visitors the web make research and there are literally billions of requests per month. The problem is how to get a fair share of the billions of searches?

How do you get people to your site?

The answer to this question revolves around two elements of the marketing plan, the message and the media. Although Internet marketing has the technical differences between traditional print and electronic media have not changed the basic principles of marketing. You need to market your product or your service, and the most effective way to inform the market that the product is available. Called a unique selling point. Ask yourself a question.

Do you focus on what makes you different?

The key is how to solve a problem with a product or service. You can offer free shipping, customer service, money back guarantee, and one of the most effective, the set bonus with every purchase. Once you have decided the unique selling proposition, you should understand how to use it to drive quality traffic to your website and will have to serve as a call to action on arrival. Average of course you have to drive traffic to your website, but keep in mind that not all traffic is equal.

Two essential keys to success

When approaching these questions, you are a success or failure. The focus is on the first page of major search engines like Google, when someone does a search. For example, if you sell these products, you want be one of the top ten. So how do you do that? It is really a strategy in two parts. The first is to optimize your site in search engines (SEO). You can do it yourself if you have the time to swap out how, or if you need to invest. When outsourcing, do your due diligence as there are thousands of SEO companies who are looking for your business.

The second part of the strategy is to develop a web presence. The presence of a network is defined as something that exists on the Internet, which is performed by someone have a link to their website from economic forum, your favorite social network, object link, newsletter by e-mail, other services or other websites.

The above examples are free. Well, not cost money, but time. Alternatives are paid advertising. Pay-Per-Click (PPC) advertising has become very popular. It is also a good way to quickly announced a budget if you do not know what you?re doing. If you decide to go this route, start small and test test test. When you create your ad, find and rail transport, the money and the scale. This method of Internet marketing requires constant vigilance, or you can waste your time and money.

The best advice for those who are new to internet marketing for online businesses is to have a manager or supervisor, you have confidence in. Like any business, it can not be determined if you not knowing how it works, and expect to be successful, but if you are someone who know, you can go through this process which?is much less stressful and more profitable.

iPad dominates tablet Web traffic among tablets

4 hrs.

Those spunky?Android tablets may have made big gains on Apple's flagship slate in recent months in terms of sales, but competitors still have a long way to go when it comes to actual usage. So says Chitika Insights, an ad and analytics firm that claims the iPad still accounts for a full 87 percent of all tablet Web traffic.

For every 100 iPad impressions Chitika receives, it only receives 14.75 impressions from all other tablets combined, VentureBeat reports.

As you can see in the chart below, the Kindle Fire family is far and away the second most popular tablet on Chitika's ad network, and it generates more than 20 times less traffic than the iPad, accounting for just 4.88 percent of all impressions. The vaunted Google Nexus tablets? Just 1.22 percent.

Early reports peg Microsoft's Surface tablet as the most-used Windows 8/RT device, but it only accounts for 0.22 percent of all tablet traffic by Chitika's count???just 0.04 points ahead of the defunct HP TouchPad's share. No wonder Microsoft has broadened the Surface's distribution.

Android tablets, on the other hand, have been on a hot streak of late. Google-powered tablets managed to knock the iPad's market share down to "just" 50.4 percent in the third quarter, which was the Apple tablet's smallest chunk since its launch.

One strong quarter is just the start of an uphill battle for Android, however. As Chitika's numbers show, years of utter dominance by the iPad have given it a substantial lead when it comes to actual usage. It will be interesting to see if the release of the iPad mini and fourth-gen iPad chew into Android's gains when the fourth-quarter sales numbers are released.

How To Improve Your Success In Internet Marketing To Make Money

How to make money online.

It?s really not much of a secret that not everyone out there who starts up a business on the web is going to be successful, but one fact you can bank on is that there is enough opportunity for everyone to be successful. And with some great tips like the ones below, there is no reason that you cannot achieve success.

A very simple tip to remember for Web marketing is to set goals. You should have some idea what your website intends to accomplish and how you plan to go about accomplishing it. You should also devise a system to keep track of the goals you have created and track your accomplishments for future reference.

Make Money

One of the best ways in order to make money marketing your products on the internet is by holding $1 specials for potential customers. People will be encouraged to buy your products for a dollar and may buy other products as well. You can sell a certain e-book for $1 but have an ad next to it that sells another e-book for $20.

Online marketing is the absolute best way to make money and the best way to do that is with popular, established search engines. Simply because of popularity and because they store every search and pop up ads based on demographics, it is the easiest to use and most efficient way of sending ads.

Make Money Online

?Increase traffic? is the one high commandment of internet promotion, but maybe it shouldn?t be. Traffic is good, and more traffic is better, but never forget that satisfying customers is how you actually make money online. Do what you can to increase your website?s traffic without losing sight of the customers that actually pay for your bottom line.

When setting prices for the products you are selling, be sure to keep customer demographics in mind. For example, if you are selling guides for college students to make money online while they are in school, selling those guides for $100 would be foolish, since many college students don?t have that kind of money to burn.

How To Make Money

To network and improve the visibility of your brand, go to real-world web marketing events. There are several such events every year, such as PubCon, where internet marketers can interact with their virtual colleagues and share ideas on how to make money. If you?re lucky, you can even find a business partner.

Two similar businesses on the same street may cause one to fail, but two million similar businesses online and there?s still room for two million more to compete. It?s all about who markets the best to their particular niche. There is literally room for everyone. And that?s why it?s important to use what you?ve learned above. The competition will run you over if you?re not applying these tips.

Why 2012 food health studies are making me sick | Opinionated ...

Why 2012 food health studies are making me sick

Coffee is now good for you. According to a research study, it may help prevent Type 2 diabetes, Parkinson's, stroke and dementia as well as help you live a little longer. But java lovers know this: Another study says that drinking three or more cups of caffeinated coffee may be linked to a higher risk of glaucoma.

From a study announced last January involving school junk food to the most recent study that demonizes black licorice, 2012 has been a year rich in food health studies.

And while I don't drink coffee and don't concern myself much with the studies mentioned above, the results of a gluttony of other research studies have caused me to not only re-examine my own diet but to make me lose my appetite.

Last May, I learned that a study by German-Swiss researchers found that taking calcium supplements may increase heart attack risk by a whopping 86 percent. As one of the 44 million people who either have osteoporosis or who are at risk for the disease, you better believe I took notice.

Although my doctor ? a prominent bone specialist at the University of Chicago Medical Center ? isn't convinced the study is conclusive, he did advise me to stop popping calcium pills and get my daily dose of calcium from food ? all 1,200 milligrams.

Sounds simple enough. It isn't. Dairy foods are the obvious go-to calcium choice. Of course, I'd prefer to load up on the stuff by chowing down on pizza and ice cream, but, alas, they're both high in saturated fat and come with the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Instead, I've been gulping down so much skim milk, along with other nonfat and low-fat dairy products, I should have my own personal cow. I also ladle plain yogurt on my, yes, salad. But when I can't stomach another spoonful, I gobble up other calcium-dense foods.

Think canned salmon ? with the bones (183 milligrams per serving). Or canned sardines (325 milligrams). Or turnip greens (128 milligrams). How can I describe my average dinner meal? Publican or Slurping Turtle or even McDonald's, it's not.

And just when I'm starting to settle into this mainly white diet, the results of another study sucker-punches me in the abdomen. Rice and rice products, according to a Consumer Reports?investigation, contain potentially dangerous levels of arsenic.

Samples of brown rice were found to contain more arsenic than white rice. And rice grown in the South had more arsenic than rice grown in California, India or Thailand.

But that's not the worst news. Recently a study ? from Mayo Clinic, no less ? found that a diet high in carbohydrates and sugar is associated with dementia and that eating more protein and fat may offer some protection.

Confession: I'm a longtime lover of desserts. If you need proof, just check out my other blog, Sugar Buzz Chicago. Over the years, I have been known to laugh smugly at anyone on Atkins and other low-carb diets. I'm not laughing anymore.

Still, these three studies are leaving me with a buffet of more questions than answers: Can ingesting mass quantities of dairy products ? even nonfat or low-fat ones, lead to dreaded diseases such as cancer?

Should I swap more nutritious brown rice for white rice or should I just give up the grain cold turkey?

Are just simple carbohydrates bad, or are complex carbohydrates now a no-no too?

And the most important question of all: Would someone please tell me definitively what I should eat or, well, just SHUT UP?

The results of these food health studies are very hard to swallow ? even though I've been trying to. And every other day there's another study, leaving me to pick and choose from a menu of sometimes contradictory and confusing information.

I'm willing to bet that if researchers did a study of people who hear about food health studies, they'd discover a population more likely to have anorexia, bulimia, insomnia, depression and general anxiety.

But just when I was about go on a food study fast, along comes an article from the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine that says that the higher a country's chocolate consumption, the more Nobel laureates it produces per capita.

One of the findings of the author, Dr. Franz Messerli of St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital and Columbia University in New York, is that Switzerland, which has led in chocolate consumption, also leads the pack in Nobel Prize winners. Finally, information I could eat right up.

Pass the M&M's.

Former President George H.W. Bush in intensive care

Former President George H.W. Bush continues to fight a stubborn fever in the intensive care unit at Houston Methodist Hospital.

"Following a series of setbacks including a persistent fever, President Bush was admitted to the intensive care unit at Methodist Hospital on Sunday where he remains in guarded condition," Bush family spokesman Jim McGrath revealed in a prepared statement. "Doctors at Methodist continue to be cautiously optimistic about the current course of treatment. The president is alert and conversing with medical staff, and is surrounded by family."

McGrath earlier told ABC affiliate KTRK that the former president was awake and joking with doctors, but had yet to respond to medication designed to reduce the fever.

Bush, 88, has been in the intensive care unit in Houston's Methodist Hospital since Sunday, and hospitalized since Nov. 23, when he was brought to the hospital with a bronchitis-like cough. A hospital statement released on Dec. 13 predicted the former president would be discharged before Christmas.

Hospital Media spokesman David Bricker told ABC News that Houston Methodist Hospital will be releasing an updated statement on Bush's condition, but could not provide a timeline for the release and added that such information would be revealed when doctors felt it was appropriate and in accordance with the wishes of the Bush family.

READ: President George H.W. Bush on Life and Lasting Friendships

President Obama reportedly was being updated on Bush's condition but hadn't spoken directly with the Bush family.

A young Navy fighter pilot during WWII and former CIA director, Bush developed a warm relationship with his successor, Bill Clinton, teaming up to raise money for Asian tsunami victims in 2004 and then again in 2005 for victims of Hurricane Katrina.

David Gregory Defended By Wall Street Journal - Business Insider

NBC

"Meet the Press" host David Gregory found a seemingly unlikely defender this morning in the Wall Street Journal editorial board, which slammed the investigation into whether Gregory?broke the law by possessing a 30-round magazine and showing it on television.

On Sunday's "Meet the Press," Gregory held up a magazine?while interviewing National Rifle Association CEO Wayne LaPierre. Police have since said that it was not legal for Gregory to show the magazine on television. Critics have popped up urging his arrest, and a petition to arrest Gregory has nearly 10,000 signatures as of Thursday morning.

But The Wall Street Journal's edit board sarcastically called it an "illuminating debate."

Moving right along in America's gun control, er, "conversation," we now have the illuminating debate over the alleged criminality of "Meet the Press" host David Gregory. Somehow this seems appropriate to the quality of the rest of the gun debate. [...]

How perfect can you get? Mr. Gregory interrogates Mr. LaPierre on the subject of whether to ban a magazine that it is illegal for Mr. Gregory to display but apparently easy enough to acquire in time for a Sunday morning broadcast. So here we have a possible indictment that would be entirely nonsensical of a journalist who was trying to embarrass an NRA official over an ammunition ban whose impact would be entirely symbolic.

Various media are also reporting that an online petition is underway on the White House website calling for Mr. Gregory's indictment. It isn't clear that Mr. Gregory is guilty of anything other than perhaps overzealousness in pursuit of the conventional gun-control wisdom, which is not a crime unless we want to empty newsrooms and fill up jails from coast to coast.

Cliff looms: Kicking the Can, Washington-style

(AP) ? When it comes to the nation's budget challenges, congressional leaders are fond of saying dismissively they don't want to kick the can down the road.

But now, a deadline hard ahead, even derided half-measures are uncertain as President Barack Obama and lawmakers struggle to avert across-the-board tax increases and spending cuts that comprise an economy-threatening fiscal cliff.

Congressional officials said Wednesday they knew of no significant strides toward a compromise over a long Christmas weekend, and no negotiations have been set.

After conferring on a conference call, House Republican leaders said they remain ready for talks, urged the Senate to consider a House-passed bill that extends all existing tax cuts, but gave no hint they intend to call lawmakers back into session unless the Senate first passes legislation.

"The lines of communication remain open, and we will continue to work with our colleagues to avert the largest tax hike in American history, and to address the underlying problem, which is spending," the leadership said in a statement.

A short while later Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev. countered that the House leadership should allow action on a Senate-passed bill that lets income tax rates rise only on incomes above $200,000 for individuals and $250,000 for couples. The measure could "pass tomorrow" if put to a vote, he said.

The Senate is due in session Thursday, although the immediate agenda includes legislation setting the rules for government surveillance of suspected spies and terrorists abroad, including Americans, as well as a measure providing $60 billion for victims of Superstorm Sandy.

Obama decided to cut short his Hawaii vacation for an overnight flight expected to get him back to the White House on Thursday.

Apart from the cliff, other financial challenges loom for divided government, where political brinkmanship has become the norm. The Treasury disclosed during the day it would take accounting measures to avoid reaching the government's borrowing limit of $16.4 trillion by year's end. The changes will provide about two months of additional leeway.

Separately, spending authority for much of the government will expire on March 27, 2013.

After weeks of negotiations, the president urged lawmakers late last week to scale back their ambitions for avoiding the fiscal cliff and send him legislation preventing tax cuts on all but the highest-earning Americans and extending unemployment benefits for the long-term jobless. Longer, term, he said he still supports deficit cuts that were key to the earlier talks.

"Everybody's got to give a little bit in a sensible way," he said at the White House.

The House has no plans to convene, following last week's rebellion in which conservatives torpedoed Speaker John Boehner's legislation to prevent scheduled tax increases on most, while letting them take effect on million-dollar wage earners.

"How we get there, God only knows," the Ohio Republican said of efforts to protect the economy ? and taxpayers ? from the tax increases and spending cuts.

"Now is the time to show leadership, not kick the can down the road," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said a little over a week ago after Boehner announced he would shift his own focus from bipartisan talks to the approach that eventually was torpedoed by his own rank and file.

It's a phrase that political leaders use when they want to suggest others want to avoid tackling major problems, and one that Boehner, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor of Virginia and even Obama as well as Reid have used.

"We have a spending problem. We have to address it, And we're not going to address it by kicking the can down the road," the speaker said at a news conference late last week when he was asked about setting a vote on a plan that Democrats find acceptable.

Cantor recently used the same approach in challenging Obama to agree to savings from Medicare and other benefit programs. "This has to be a part of this agreement or else we just continue to dig the hole deeper, asking folks to allow us to kick the can down the road further and that we don't want to do," he said on Nov. 28.

In fact, it's a phrase that has been in use for over a year as Obama and Republicans jockey for position on pocketbook issues.

In July 2011, when he was struggling with Republicans over the threat of a first-ever government default, Obama said he had "heard reports that there may be some in Congress who want to do just enough to make sure that America avoids defaulting on our debt in the short term. But then wants to kick the can down the road when it comes to solving the larger problem, our deficit."

A few months later, an extension of a payroll tax cut was the issue, and Boehner was insisting on a year-long renewal rather than the temporary plan that passed the Senate with votes from lawmakers in both parties.

"How can you do tax policy for two months?" he asked on Dec. 18, 2011. "I believe that two months is just kicking the can down the road.

"The American people are tired of that."

At issue now is series of tax increases and spending cuts scheduled to kick in with the new year that economists caution could send the economy into a recession.

Beauty and Size: The Wild Sex Merry XXXMas Marathon Continues...

ShareShare ?ShareEmail ?PrintPrint

The next two episodes of Wild Sex are by far the most popular. In the first, aptly titled ?Beach Babes and Boob Jobs?, I look at the concept of beauty in the animal kingdom and how this concept does not really apply to the human animal. In ?Size Matters?, we take a look at some of the largest penises in the natural world, and scale them up for some pretty crazy visual drama. Can we say 40 foot long penis?! We also compare and contrast the evolutionary history of male primates when it comes to both penis length and testicle size. You might be surprised at how different apes ?measure up? to each other.

How to Get Your Car's Stuck Shifter Unstuck

Let me quell your fears: This problem is not the end of the world ... probably. Your Passat could have a couple of things going on, though. The shifter in your car is not rigidly connected to the transmission. Like most front-wheel-drive cars, it uses push?pull cables to snake around to the front of the car and control the transverse-mounted transmission. A tube around the two cables protects them from binding and allows each to be cleanly clamped to the body of the car. At the factory the cables and shift mechanism are lubricated, but over time that lubricant breaks down or can become contaminated and will actually make shifting a bit more difficult. This effect is amplified in cold weather, when the viscosity of the lubricant goes way up, making things stickier.

The cheap but labor-intensive fix is to take apart the center console and extract the cables, hang them up on a wall, and spray some penetrating fluid down the insides, followed by a shot of brake cleaner and then white lithium grease. Clean and lube the shift mechanism in a similar manner. The easier but more expensive alternative would be to buy and install shift cables and clean just the shifter.

There are two other possible root causes of sticky shifting, and I'll list them in order of escalating expense. On one hand, the transmission fluid could be breaking down, especially if you're driving the car hard and have never changed the fluid. Alternatively, your synchronizers may be getting worn. These are responsible for aligning the gears to the shafts and making the shifting process smoother. Worn synchros in cold weather make shifting trickier. If this is the case, you'll find shifting gets more and more difficult over time, even in warm months. You could live with it, spend a thousand bucks or more on a transmission rebuild, or put money toward a new car.

Singapore-based Inventory Management Startup TradeGecko ...

Former designer Carl Thompson left the fashion industry after years of wrangling with business administration spreadsheets, but hopes his startup TradeGecko will spare other small business owners from the same fate. Its cloud-based inventory and sales management application was developed to emphasize user experience with clean and intuitive data displays.

The Singapore-based startup, which launched to the public in September, targets regional wholesalers who want to develop better customer relationships. Last week, it closed on a seed funding round of $650,000 led by seed investment firm WaveMaker Labs, and including Golden Gate Ventures and the Singapore National Research Foundation. The money raised enables TradeGecko to integrate its cloud-based inventory and order management system with other SaaS applications like Xero, Shopify and Vend.

Before founding TradeGecko, Thompson ran a streetwear clothing label called Crowded Elevator from 2007 to 2011 that sold to about 40 fashion retailers in New Zealand and Australia. Thompson enjoyed the creative aspects of the business?product development, events planning, marketing?but was frustrated because he could not find a simple, end-to-end solution to manage backend administration.

Eventually, Thompson says he shut down Crowded Elevator ?after realizing I was spending my entire day in spreadsheets doing mundane business administration, which was doing my head in.?

After seeing other small business owners struggling with the same issues, Thompson started developing TradeGecko along with his co-founders, brothers Cameron Priest and Bradley Priest, to be the application he wished he had had while running Crowded Elevator.

?Inventory management is only part of the problem. I wanted an order and sales management system that keeps track of inventory coming in and out that also linked to my Shopify store and Xero accounts. A well-designed end-to-end system that saved me time, eliminated double handling errors and allowed me to get back to fun stuff,? says Thompson.

TradeGecko screenshot 2

The system integrates order processing, inventory management and customer relationship management software with real-time customer and sales data, and bundles it all up into an easy-to-use, attractive package. The site works on tablet browsers, allowing sales teams mobile access to customer and sales data.

Though there are several small-business order and inventory management software startups out there, Thompson says TradeGecko differentiates itself by taking ?a very holistic approach to order and inventory management. We are user-experience-first, which I think is our biggest difference. TradeGecko?s clients work in sectors ranging ?from fashion to fertilizer? and the Web site has four pricing tiers ranging from $49 to $499 per month. TradeGecko currently has accounts from 26 countries, but is currently targeting wholesalers, distributors and importers in Hong Kong, Singapore, New Zealand and Australia.

As the company grows and expands its marketing outreach to the U.S. early next year, Thompson says ?bigger, albeit much slower incumbents? such as mySAP and NETSUITE will be their main competitors, as well as US-based startups working on competitive products (some notable ones include Lettuce and Stitch Labs. SMBs are a huge market in the U.S., so hopefully TradeGecko will grab a big slice of that pie.

Firm in fungal outbreak files for bankruptcy

By JoNel Aleccia, NBC News

The compounding pharmacy blamed for 620 infections and 39 deaths in an outbreak of fungal meningitis and other infections caused by contaminated drugs filed for bankruptcy Friday, and pledged to establish a fund to compensate victims.?

The New England Compounding Center of Framingham, Mass., faces more than 400 lawsuits from patients who received epidural steroid injections later found to be tainted with fungus linked to serious and lethal infections, records showed.

The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the Massachusetts district bankruptcy court.?

In a statement issued late Friday, the company said the goal of the bankruptcy is to provide a "greater, quicker, fairer payout" to creditors than could be achieved through "piecemeal" litigation.?

NECC also announced the appointment of Keith D. Lowey as the firm's independent director and chief restructuring officer. He will supervise the restructuring and be responsible for establishing NECC's effort to create a compensation fund. NECC's bankruptcy counsel, Daniel Cohn, said that claimants and their lawyers will be "actively involved" in the compensation process, according to the statement.?

"Many families across the U.S. have been impacted by this great tragedy, and it is difficult to comprehend the sense of loss so many people have experienced," Lowey said in a statement. "Everyone associated with the New England Compounding Center shares that sense of loss."

Elizabeth A. Kaveny, a lawyer who represents five clients, all in Michigan, who said they were sickened by contaminated shots, says the company's action is no guarantee of justice for the alleged victims.

"NECC gets no bonus points for establishing a 'victims' compensation fund' after victimizing hundreds of patients in our country," she said in a statement to NBC News. "It is an obvious and necessary step of a bankruptcy proceeding and all victims need to be compensated. While NECC clearly should declare bankruptcy and never be permitted to reopen its doors, we have significant questions as to why this is a Chapter 11 bankruptcy, what funds are available for NECC's victims and how the victims' claims will be evaluated."

Problems with three lots of NECC steroids injected into?some 14,000 people in 23 states were first detected in September. The company was shuttered in October after federal inspectors found widespread evidence of contamination throughout the pharmacy, some dating back to January.?

The firm was licensed as a compounding pharmacy and was supposed to be mixing medications to order on prescription-by-prescription basis. However, investigations have shown the firm worked on a much larger scale and evaded several run-ins with the Food and Drug Administration and state regulators over the size of its operation and previous cases of contamination.?

The illnesses and deaths -- which include not only fungal meningitis, but strokes, joint infections and spinal infections -- have prompted new demands to overhaul the way that compounding pharmacies are regulated in the U.S.?

haidarr: VOR Calls for Mental Health Reform - Extends Heartfelt ...

?Politics over diverse issues have divided our nation,? said Julie Huso, VOR Executive Director. ?There can be no justice for these senseless killings in Connecticut and elsewhere, but uniting as a nation will get us as close to healing as possible and help prevent tragedies in the future.?

Elk Grove Village, IL (PRWEB) December 21, 2012

VOR, a national organization advocating for high quality care and human rights for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, joins the chorus of heartfelt sympathy expressed for the families and friends of the victims of the Sandy Hook tragedy. While many citizens and organizations are taking aim at gun control, VOR believes that systemic reform of disability and mental health policies is critically necessary to prevent future violence.

?Politics over diverse issues have divided our nation,? said Julie Huso, VOR Executive Director. ?There can be no justice for these senseless killings in Connecticut and elsewhere, but uniting as a nation will get us as close to healing as possible and help prevent tragedies in the future.?

?We can't tolerate this anymore,? stated President Barak Obama, as he addressed a grieving nation Sunday night. ??These tragedies must end, and to end them, we must change.? (Transcript of President?s Remarks __Transcript of President?s Remarks __, reprinted by The Washington Post, December 16, 2012)

For 30 years, VOR has been calling on Congress to support specialized treatment options for people with profound intellectual and developmental disabilities.

?Too many people who need help have nowhere to go, are turned away, are displaced from specialized care, or are not adequately treated and monitored,? said Huso. ?Patients? rights have trumped almost completely safety ? to self and others -- in the name of ?deinstitutionalization? and ?integration.??

Decades of deinstitutionalization has resulted in the depletion of an adequate safety net for people who need our help.

?Our mental health system has completely failed individuals with severe mental illness and their communities,? said Doris A. Fuller, executive director for the Treatment Advocacy Center, a nonprofit organization which advocates for timely and effective treatment of severe mental illness. ?We have emptied the nation's hospitals, gutted state and local mental health programs, and turned involuntary treatment into a debate point instead of using it as a viable option to prevent tragedy involving those too ill to help themselves.? [Treatment for Mental Illness Should be as Easy to Get as Guns, Treatment Advocacy Center (December 14, 2012)].

Beginning in the 1960s, closing specialized care centers for people with developmental disabilities and mental illness ? ?deinstitutionalization? ? was meant to advance the civil liberties of those inappropriately institutionalized by offering care and supports in a less restrictive environment.

Some advocates, however, say deinstitutionalization has gone much too far. Today, people with profound developmental disabilities and health concerns, and those with severe mental illness, are being removed from highly specialized care or prevented from accessing such care in the first place.

?What began with altruistic motives ? namely, better and more appropriate care for disabled people ? has spawned into something very different,? remarked Huso. ?Today, very fragile people are being forced from their homes under the belief that money will be saved and quality of life will improve.?

?We?re protecting civil liberties at the expense of health and safety,? says Fuller. ?Deinstitutionalization has gone way too far.? (?Seven facts about America?s mental health-care system,? The Washington Post (quoting Fuller) (December 14, 2012))

VOR calls for reform, beginning with a moratorium on deinstitutionalization

Tragedies will continue to befall people with I/DD, children, adults, and citizens if our laws and policies continue to support deinstitutionalization, depriving people with disabilities of needed specialized, residential care and treatment.

?Over and over again, news investigations and state audits show that these very fragile individuals need comprehensive, skilled care. They are the ICU residents of the disability community. Scattering them in homes around a community only separates them from qualified staff, life-sustaining health care, oversight, and friends,? said Ann Knighton, VOR?s president.

?Prison is now the last resort for the mentally ill,? wrote Liza Long, whose son, Michael has severe mental illness. [?I am Adam Lanza?s Mother,? by Liza Long (The Blue Review, December 14, 2012)].

President Obama vowed to use ?whatever power this office holds to engage my fellow citizens, from law enforcement, to mental health professionals, to parents and educators, in an effort aimed at preventing more tragedies like this.? (Transcript of President?s Remarks, reprinted by The Washington Post, December 16, 2012)

Yet, a significant part of the problem begins at his doorstep, says VOR.

?Significant federal funds and energies by powerful federal agencies are dedicated to deinstitutionalization,? said Tamie Hopp, Director of Government Relations and Advocacy for VOR. ?The Justice Department has pursued more than 30 legal actions which at their core aim to displace individuals from specialized care options. In Georgia, a Justice Department settlement calls for moving 9,000 people with mental illness from mental health facilities by 2015.? (?Olmstead: Community Integration for everyone,? U.S Department of Justice?s Olmstead Enforcement Website); (U.S. v. Georgia Fact Sheet, U.S. Department of Justice (October 19, 2012)

Likewise, in a move that VOR characterizes as ?reckless,? the National Council on Disability, an independent federal agency, last month released a 300 page policy document and toolkit calling for the closure of all ?institutions,? which it defines as any setting larger than 4 people. [?Deinstitutionalization: Unfinished Business,? National Council on Disability (November 2012); ?Reckless disregard shown for the needs and choices of vulnerable persons with severe and profound disabilities,? VOR (December 2012)]

?As a nation, the Sandy Hook tragedies have left us heartbroken,? said Hopp. ?Families of individuals with profound cognitive disabilities recognize the reform that is needed better than most. Their sons and daughters need highly specialized treatment. Instead federal agencies, some state governments and advocates, are putting energies into removing their loved ones from treatment?

We agree with the President. ?This must end.? (Transcript of President?s Remarks, reprinted by The Washington Post, December 16, 2012).

Remembering Ramanujan: India Celebrates Its Famous Mathematical Son

India, home of the number zero, ends a yearlong math party in unique fashion

PORTRAIT OF A GENIUS: Srinivasa Ramanujan, Indian mathematician, was born December 22, 2012. Image: Konrad Jacobs, Oberwolfach Photo Collection

December 22, 2012, marks the 125th anniversary of the birth of legendary Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan. An intuitive mathematical genius, Ramanujan's discoveries have influenced several areas of mathematics, but he is probably most famous for his contributions to number theory and infinite series, among them fascinating formulas ( pdf ) that can be used to calculate digits of pi in unusual ways.

Last December Prime Minister Manmohan Singh declared 2012 to be a National Mathematics Year in India in honor of Ramanujan's quasiquicentennial. Ramanujan's story is dramatic and somewhat larger than life. It is even the subject of an opera by Indian-German composer Sandeep Bhagwati, a novel and two plays . Largely self-taught, he dropped out of college, took a job as a clerk in Madras and attracted the attention of British mathematician G. H. Hardy through written correspondence in 1913. Although Ramanujan's mother believed that as a Brahmin (the highest class in the Indian caste system, which was in place at the time) he should not travel overseas, Ramanujan, aged 27, went to England in 1914 and spent the ensuing war years working with Hardy and other mathematicians? at the University of Cambridge. He grew quite ill in England, and in 1919 he returned to India where he died in 1920. Since his death at age 32 mathematicians have analyzed his notebooks ( pdf ), which are full of formulas but light on justification. Most of the formulas have turned out to be correct, and researchers continue to learn from his work while trying to understand and prove them.

India's mathematical heritage extends far beyond Ramanujan's time. The nation is considered home of the concept of zero. Babylonians had used a space as a placeholder (similar to the role of "0" in the number 101), but this space could not stand alone or at the end of a number. (In our number system, as in theirs, this could be problematic; imagine trying to tell the difference between the numbers 1 and 10 by context alone.) In India, however, zero was treated as a number like any other. India is also the home of our decimal numeral system.

Indian government and mathematical societies pursued several projects to celebrate their year of mathematics, from enrichment programs for students and teachers to the "Mathematical Panorama Lectures" that occurred around the country. This series of 20 short lecture courses, which will continue into 2013, brings prominent mathematicians from different fields to Indian universities to deliver five or six lectures. M. S. Raghunathan, president of the Ramanujan Mathematical Society and chair of the organizing committee for the National Mathematics Year, wrote in an e-mail that he hopes the lectures will facilitate an infusion of Indian talent into fields that lack it right now.

Indeed, a primary purpose of the year of mathematics is to reinvigorate mathematical education in India. In his speech announcing the event, Prime Minister Singh said that although India has produced many distinguished mathematicians, "for a country of our size, the number of competent mathematicians that we have is badly inadequate." He mentioned concerns about the rigidity of India?s academic system, which some believe might squelch rather than nurture mathematical curiosity and achievement. "A genius like Ramanujan would shine bright even in the most adverse of circumstances, but we should be geared to encourage and nurture good talent which may not be of the same caliber as that of Ramanujan," he said. Singh also mentioned the need to prevent attrition of mathematically interested people. "There is a general perception in our society that the pursuit of mathematics does not lead to attractive career opportunities," he said. "This perception must change." Lectures for undergraduates, camps for motivated youngsters and educational programs designed to acquaint teachers with new topics and pedagogical ideas have all been part of the attempt to nurture mathematical interest at all levels.

Two longer-term projects begun this year could help as well: a documentary on the history of Indian mathematics and a mathematics museum in Chennai. Raghunathan hopes that the documentary will be available in 2014 and the museum will open its doors in 2015.

This yearlong fete is culminating in "The Legacy of Srinivasa Ramanujan," a conference at the University of Delhi from December 17 to 22. Included are technical lectures on mathematics influenced by Ramanujan's work, public presentations on Ramanujan's notebooks, dance performances and a film about Ramanujan's life. The annual SASTRA Ramanujan Prize, which recognizes a mathematician age 32 or younger who works in a field influenced by Ramanujan, will be awarded as well. The awardee this year is Zhiwei Yun of Stanford University, whose work lies at the intersection of geometric representation theory, algebraic geometry and number theory.
